The History of Steamboat Wharf
Before we moved our farm down to Windmill Point, Virginia and started using FlipFarm, we started our farm in the small town of Morattico, Virginia. Our name is a nod to a steamboat wharf that used to exist on top of our lease. In an earlier century, Morattico was a hub for steamboats bringing produce and raw materials from the farmland to the urban centers of Baltimore, D.C., and Philadelphia. Steamboat Wharf featured a cannery that bought wild oysters from the watermen who dredged the bay a century ago. Today, the only remnants of Steamboat Wharf are a few weathered dock pilings, broken sippin’ jugs, and thriving wild oyster bar.
